Artist Statement
Fascinated as a child watching the glassblowers in Murano, Italy, I have harbored a love affair with glass all my life, inexplicably drawn to its strength despite it’s fragile appearance, and to it’s translucency, fluidity and light bending ability. I have worked in various mediums over time, and finally found a lost love when I began working with flame-worked glass in 2006.
Glasswork is a dance akin to meditation, where flame or heat sensuously transforms a solid medium into flowing liquid, and then back again, as each piece takes its intended shape. Each piece begins as a concept, but may rapidly transform as the process develops. I have learned to be patient, to wait for the crucible of change and be open to new discoveries.
My work reflects the repetition and synchronicity of nature, reminding me of the rhythm and balance of life which is at the same time predictable and continually astonishing.
I am drawn to analogous colors, and to the forms and patterns of the natural world, of which we are all undeniably a part.
My present body of work utilizes both flame-worked and kiln fused techniques to create functional, wearable or purely aesthetic art pieces. Explorations of the masculine and feminine dimensions of every person, and the integration of all the parts of our being: the spirit, heart, mind and body, have influenced my recent work. My aspiration is to evoke emotion and desire in the viewer; to bring them into the Now, if even for a moment.
